Christian Charles Philip Bale was born in Wales on January 30, 1974, and got his start in London’s theaters. He rose to fame after he was recommended for a role in Empire of the Sun, directed by Steven Spielberg.


Bale took on one of his most memorable roles playing Patrick Bateman in American Psycho in year 2000. Four years later, Bale landed the coveted role of Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins, a film that would secure his place in Hollywood history. The second installment in the Batman film franchise, The Dark Knight went on to gross more than $500 million.


The actor has also appeared in silver screen hits 3:10 to Yuma and I’m Not There, among others. Bale has lived in Los Angeles since the 1990s. He holds US citizenship. Bale married Sandra “Sibi” Blažić, a former model, on 29 January 2000. The couple have two children: a daughter and a son.


Bale is recognized for “his rigorous commitment to whatever weight fluctuation a role demands” as well as “the intensity with which he completely inhabits his roles”.


Max O’Connell of deemed Bale’s commitment to altering his physical appearance “an anchoring facet to a depiction of obsession” in his performances, while the Los Angeles Times’s Hugh Hart described Bale’s acting style as “driven by Method-like intensity that convincingly animates even his most extreme physical transformations.”


Bale has mentioned that he does not practice method acting and that he does not “really have a particular technique”.


The actor has been known for his versatility, with Martha Ross of The Mercury News describing him as “one of the most versatile actors of his generation”. Known to be very private about his personal life, Bale has said that his goal is to embody “a character without showing anything of myself”. He has also been noted for portraying roles with an American accent. In real life, Bale speaks in an “emphatic, non-posh English” accent.
