Ellen DeGeneres used the Tuesday’s show to reveal a health update on her wife, Portia de Rossi, after an emergency appendectomy. Meanwhile, DeGeneres’s show is struggling after having seen a huge ratings plummet – more than 1 million viewers in its 18th season.

According to a research firm, Nielsen, the program has
averaged 1.5 million viewers. That figure is down from 2.6 million viewers
during the same time last year. This happened when DeGeneres returned to air with
an apology after the show’s scandal led to an investigation and dismissals.
The Ellen DeGeneres Show has had a steeper decline
than any of its competitors. Ideally, the show competes with Live: With Kelly
and Ryan which has 2.7 million viewers, however, it is now closer to shows
hosted by Kelly Clarkson with 1.3 million viewers and Tamron Hall with 1.1
million viewers.
In the entertainment business, a loss of ratings means
a loss of revenue. From its September to January of the 2019 – 2020 season, The
Ellen DeGeneres Show raked in $131 million from advertisers, according to the
research firm Kantar. For the same time frame for its 2020 – 2021 season, the show
was only able to bring in $105 million which is $26 million less from the
previous record.
People are speculating over how things will turn out
for the show host, whose brand image is to “Be Kind”, after her show employees stated
that they experienced “racism, fear and intimidation” on the production set.
Moreover, there were speculations in December that Ellen
was having trouble booking guests, it hasn’t stopped A-listers like Jennifer
Garner, Michelle Obama, Justin Bieber, Kris Jenner, and Demi Lovato from guesting
this season.
