The automaker wants to refine the public’s view of the brand, and wants the Super Bowl audience to be aware that it has some seriously advanced technology in play. That’s the main theme for the brand’s Super Bowl 55 commercial, which spoofs Tim Burton’s classic 1990 hit film Edward Scissorhands where Johnny Depp played the lead role.

The said ad, was set to air during Super Bowl LV, where it features Call Me by Your Name and Dune lead star Timothée Chalamet as Edward’s son, Edgar, and Winona Ryder who reprises her role as Edward’s love interest in the original film. We see Edgar suffers the hardships of scissors-as-hands living, Kim Boggs takes notice when he finds joy in driving via a VR headset.

This leads to where Edgar was gifted by his mother, a Cadillac Lyriq equipped with Super Cruise, the auto company’s hands-free highway driving-assist technology. Although it’s a little odd that Edgar likes driving, so he was given a car that allows hands-free cruising. I believe that’s a pretty small problem compared to, you know, having long and sharp blades for fingers.

Tim Burton said, “It’s rare when a work you’re proud of continues to live on and evolve with the times, even after 30 years.” The director of Edward Scissorhands added, “I’m glad to see Edgar coping with the new world! I hope both fans and those being introduced to Edward Scissorhands for the first time enjoy it.”
