Though Spears and Timberlake have not dated since
2002, but their notorious relationship has catapulted back into the pop culture
with the release of “Framing Britney Spears” documentary.
“Framing Britney Spears” premiered by the New York
Times Presents on Friday, described the persistent, and damaging narratives
that have clung to Spears’ turbulent career.
The said documentary was meant to explore the
#FreeBritney movement that ignited after her 2007 mental health crisis, fans
became particularly fascinated in the re-examination of the Spears-Timberlake story.
Framing Britney Spears sheds light to the many ways on
how the pop star has been maltreated over the years, including her romantic
affairs. Throughout her relationship with Timberlake, Britney Spears maintained
that she was a virgin; however, after their split back in 2002, the *NSYNC
singer stated otherwise in interviews. Timberlake also famously released the solo
track, “Cry Me a River,” alongside a music video which portrayed a Spears
look-alike who was unfaithful to him.
This eventually triggered the public to turn on
Spears, by essentially blaming her for the downfall of their relationship. “The
way that people treated her, to be very high school about it,” explains The New
York Times critic Wesley Morris. “Was like she was the school slut and he was
the quarterback.” Fans have been brutal on social media, with one even demanding
that Timberlake issue “a public apology, and acknowledgment of the harm he’s
done.”
On the other hand, a source stated that Spears doesn’t
condone the backlash that Timberlake is facing. “Britney has been on the
receiving end of so much hate through the years, particularly on social media,”
said the source. "She would never want her fans to
release the hounds on Justin. Hate isn't going to solve anything, regardless of
what happened in the past." The source added: "Britney does not hold
a grudge against Justin over anything he's said or done."
