The upcoming movie is written by “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight, revolves around a weekend in the life of Princess Diana where she spends a holiday with the British Royal Family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, and decides to end her tumultuous marriage to Prince Charles.

“December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold,” according to a press release. “The rumors of affairs and a divorce abound; peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, thing will be whole a lot different.”

The upcoming film is directed by Pablo Larrain which includes BAFTA nominee Timothy Spall, Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins, and Sean Harris. The film is produced by Juan de Dios Larrain for Fabula Films, Jonas Dornbach, and Janine Jackowski for Komplizen Film and BAFTA winner and Oscar nominee Paul Webster for Shoebox Films.

‘Spencer’ is supported by the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF), medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, German Federal Film Board (FFA), Film- und Medienstiftung NRW and HessenFilm und Medien.

“Spencer is a dive inside an emotional imagining of who Diana was at a pivotal turning point in her life,” Kristen Stewart said. “It is a physical assertion of the sum of her parts, which starts with her given name: Spencer. It is a harrowing effort for her to return to herself, as Diana strives to hold onto what the name Spencer means to her.”

Filming will take place in Germany and the United Kingdom and it will be expected to launch this fall. Year 2022, commemorates the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death following a car accident in Paris.
